ESA Letter for College Students
Bring your emotional support animal to the dorm. California universities must accommodate ESAs in campus housing under the Fair Housing Act — and your letter is issued within 10–15 minutes of doctor approval, charged only after you're approved.
Yes — ESAs are allowed in dorms
College is one of the most stressful transitions there is: new city, academic pressure, and for many students, the first time living away from home. The law recognizes that support animals matter here too.
Dorms Count as Housing
Courts and HUD treat university residence halls as "dwellings" under the Fair Housing Act — so campus housing offices must reasonably accommodate a documented emotional support animal, even with strict no-pet policies.
Real Support for Real Stress
Anxiety, depression, panic disorder, ADHD-related distress, and homesickness that rises to clinical significance may all qualify when a licensed professional determines an ESA provides meaningful therapeutic support.
Off-Campus Too
The same letter protects you in off-campus student apartments — waiving no-pet clauses, pet rent, and pet deposits at private rentals near campus.
From evaluation to move-in day
The whole process is online and fits between classes — appointments run 7 am to 11 pm, seven days a week.
1. Book Around Your Schedule
Evening and weekend telehealth slots mean no missed lectures. Booking is open 24 hours a day.
2. Confidential Evaluation
Meet a licensed California mental health professional by video. Your diagnosis stays private — the university only ever sees your accommodation need.
3. Submit to Disability Services
Once approved, your letter arrives within 10–15 minutes. Submit it to your school's disability/accessibility office with their ESA accommodation form — we help complete school paperwork free of charge.
Frequently asked questions
Can my university really deny pets but not my ESA?
Correct. Pet policies don't apply to emotional support animals. With reliable documentation, campus housing must consider your ESA as a reasonable accommodation under the Fair Housing Act — denials are limited to narrow cases like direct threat or fundamental alteration.
Do I need to be 18 to get an ESA letter?
Yes — our evaluations are for adults 18 and over, which covers nearly all college students living in campus or off-campus housing.
Will my school see my diagnosis?
No. Your letter documents a disability-related need for your ESA without disclosing your diagnosis. Universities may verify the letter's authenticity, and we handle that with your consent.
Does my ESA get to come to class or the dining hall?
Generally no — ESA rights cover housing, not public access. If your dog is task-trained for a psychiatric disability, a psychiatric service dog letter may fit better, since PSDs have broader access rights under the ADA.
How much does a student ESA letter cost?
The same transparent pricing as everyone: $149 for an ESA letter, with annual renewals at $99 — and you're only charged after the doctor approves you. See our cost page.
